It Started With a Bad Back
And it got much worse with pregnancy
I taught high school science for a bit (and realized that as much as I loved science, I didn't love teaching), and played rec-league volleyball badly enough to end up on a chiropractor's table with a messed up back. I went in for my back but I left thinking about my career.
At 24 I started at Life University in Marietta with no particular plan beyond general practice. I graduated, went into practice, and liked all of it fine. Then I got pregnant and developed sciatica bad enough that I was leaning on the table between patients. I went to the sports chiropractor I'd been seeing since my volleyball days, who was excellent at what she did and had genuinely no idea what to do with a pregnant woman. That was my turning point.
I got Webster certified before my son arrived, talked a colleague into learning it with me, and we traded adjustments through my third trimester.
After that, word got around, and most of my referrals were women and their kids. By 2010 I'd narrowed my practice to just that and opened Nest & Nurture in a converted bungalow on the North Shore, with a play corner in both the waiting room and treatment room along with a changing table, because moms deserve better than to change diapers on the floor or cancel appointments when the sitter falls through.
